Bring BNM forex scandal culprits to justice, demands Umno Youth leader

KUALA LUMPUR: Immediate action must be taken against the culprits of the Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) forex malfeasance which led to RM31.5 billion in losses for the country between 1992 and 1994.

Umno Baling Youth chief Mohamed Noor Mohamed Amin said no one is above the law, not even for former leaders of the country.

“The Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on the BNM forex scandal was damning, and immediate action should be taken against those responsible for the mess.

"The authorities must be swift in pressing charges against the wrongdoers,” Mohamed Noor said when speaking at the Umno Youth general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) today.

The RCI report had stated, among other things, that the-then Finance Minister had “deliberately concealed the facts and information, and made misleading statements to the Cabinet”.

The Finance Minister at the time was Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, while the Prime Minister was Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The delegate from Kedah also demanded that authorities launch an investigation into the source of wealth amassed by Dr Mahathir and his family.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Noor called for at least 60 Umno Youth delegates to be chosen as candidates in the 14th general election (GE14).

He also proposed that Umno Youth vice-chief Senator Khairul Azwan Harun be appointed a deputy minister should the party perform well in the GE14.
