KUALA LUMPUR: DAP’s Datuk Zaid Ibrahim should be charged under the Sedition Act for his remark against the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
Kuala Selangor Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim said the royal institution should not be undermined. Zaid’s words, he said, threatens the sovereignty of the royals.
“His (Zaid) arrogance towards the Sultan of Selangor’s words reflects who he is as a leader; what more a leader who does not even understand the concept of rule and be ruled (perintah dan diperintah).
“The police should take immediate action against him as the royal institution is not one which could be looked down at. Opposition leaders who are extremely vocal like Zaid would only make their supporters become arrogant and think that they are always right,” he said in a statement today.
He described Zaid’s rudeness against the royal institution as an agenda to degrade the image and dignity of the Malay monarchy.
In a Twitter post on Monday, Zaid said the Selangor ruler should be careful with his words as no one would be left out if the country “burns”.
“When some Rulers play politics; they must know the consequences. Don’t think there is no price for partisanship,” Zaid tweeted.
The post came after Sultan Sharafuddin had, in an interview with an English daily, said that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was an "angry man" and would "burn the whole country with his anger".
The sultan had warned politicians that the deliberate use of sensitive issues to fish for votes in the general election would destroy the country.
He had also expressed hope at not seeing any politicians playing with matters of race, religion and other sensitive issues for political gain.
