KUALA LUMPUR: Puteri Umno chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin’s pledge to party president Datuk Seri Najib Razak caused a commotion in the Putra World Trade Centre’s Dewan Merdeka today.
Mas Ermieyati, in her winding up speech, used the phrase, ‘you’ll never walk alone’ to describe the wing’s support for the president.
“To the president, know this: You’ll never walk alone,” pledged Mas Ermieyati.
The significance of the statement, most commonly known as the rallying cry for Liverpool Football Club, was not lost among the audience, who saw the lighter side of it.
Najib is an ardent Manchester United fan, traditional arch rivals of Liverpool.
Mas Ermieyati joined in the fun and said there’s nothing wrong with using the anthem.
“Even though we know that the president is a die-hard Manchester United fan, in this battle, there’s nothing wrong with using Liverpool’s ‘war cry’ to demonstrate loyalty and resolve. Liverpool supporters have remained steadfast, even though their glory years ended in the 1990s.
“This is the spirit that we want to see in all Umno members,” she said.
