KOTA KINABALU: Up to 31 Dec last year the Election Commission (EC) had gazetted 1.1 million voters in the state, an increase of 120,165 voters since the 13th General Election.
“We usually do gazettement every quarter (three months),” said Sabah EC assistant director (management) Mohd Yeozree Izwan Jemil at a media briefing on preparations for the 14th General Election here today.
He said those who register in the first quarter of this year may or may not be allowed to vote, depending on instructions from EC headquarters.
In the 2013 General Election, he said, only those who had registered before the end of the last quarter of 2012 were eligible to vote.
Yeozree said 20,000 staff members would be working in Sabah throughout the election period.
He said the manpower would be increased if the 13 proposed new state constituencies were included in the general election.
“As we speak, we are running 60 (state seats),” he said.
Yeozree said the state EC’s preparations were on schedule, including the delivery of materials and logistics management such as vehicles, boats, and helicopters.
“We are ready and there is no major problem. It’s just a matter of finalising certain areas. We have briefed the returning officers, heads of polling station, polling and counting agents, as well as political parties.”
Yeozree also briefed the media on dos and don’ts during the election.
