Is Tun Dr Mahathir physically fit to govern?

KUALA LUMPUR: Former DAP national vice-chairman Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim has questioned Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s fitness to assume any leadership role.

In a statement today, he said there had been much discussion on whether Dr Mahathir was medically fit to govern the country, considering his medical history and advanced age.

He said Pakatan Harapan had been busy with glib assurances about the robust state of Dr Mahathir’s health, claiming that he could outperform others half his age.

“Dr Mahathir’s supporters in making exaggerated claims about his capacity to perform have not only been reckless, but they also run the risk of giving hostage to fortune,” he said, in the statement titled “Is Tun Mahathir Physically Fit to Govern?”.

Tunku Abdul Aziz said information he received on the frequency of Dr Mahathir’s visits to the National Heart Institute (IJN) since 2015 on account of the latter’s serious heart condition, “suggests a worrying pattern.”

He said in the past three years and three months, Dr Mahathir was admitted 47 times.

“Assuming, conservatively, that each admission entailed a stay of five days at IJN, he was hospitalised for a total of 235 days.

“I wonder whether Dr Mahathir would be good enough to tell the voters in the forthcoming general elections whether the admissions record I have quoted in this statement represents the position accurately.

“If it is not accurate, what is the actual position.?”
