Let the leadership decide on Wangsa Maju: Mohd Shafie

KUALA LUMPUR: Wangsa Maju Umno division chief Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Shafei Abdullah said he will leave it to the party leadership to determine who should contest in the parliamentary contituency.

This comes after both Umno and MCA are said to be showing great interest in contesting the Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat for the upcoming 14th General Election.

He however expressed concerned that Barisan Nasional support would be affected if candidate from another party is being fielded to contest for the seat.

He said party members, in a meeting on Thursday night, were surprised when they heard rumours that MCA will be fielding its candidate there.

"For a long time, Umno has working hard at this area," he said.

It is understood that in GE14, the Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat will be "returned" to the MCA.

In exchange, the Bandar Tun Razak parliamentary seat, contested by an MCA candidate in GE13, will be handed over to Umno.

Umno Wanita chief, Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, is said to be contesting in that area.

In GE13, Mohd Shafei was defeated by PKR candidate, Datuk Dr Tan Kee Kwong, who won with a majority of 5,511 votes.

Registered voters in the Wangsa Maju parliamentary constituency comprise 61 per cent Malay, 21 per cent Chinese and 18 per cent Indian.
