Khairy prefers to remain in Rembau

REMBAU: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar would prefer to remain in the Rembau Parliamentary seat for the 14th General Election (GE14).

He acknowledged that the matter was broached by Barisan Nasional Chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak on his seat for the polls.

The Youth and Sports Minister said he had informed the Umno President that he would like to continue in the seat which he had held for the last two terms.

“There were discussions on a different place. I replied that it is up to the BN chairman to decide on the matter and as a party man I would adhere to any decisions taken,” Khairy said adding that if it was his choice, he would like to remain in the current seat.

"Although the area is considered a BN stronghold but I look at the development the area had undergone. It had been 10 years since I became an elected representative and there are many more things I want to do here, "he said.

He was speaking to reporters after launching the People's Leadership Program and also handing over keys to owners of homes which had been rehabilitated.

Khairy said he was confident that the BN will receive the people’s mandate to form the next government as they had the qualified candidate.

“I urge the voters not to make a decision based on emotion, as in the end we would lose out on development,” he added.

In the 12th general election, Khairy won the Rembau parliamentary seat with a 5,746 majority defeating PKR’s candidate Badrul Hisham Shaharin.
