(Update) Mahathir to stand in Langkawi, Mukhriz in Jerlun and Jitra

LANGKAWI: Speculation about where Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would be contesting the 14th general election ended tonight as it was announced that he would be standing in the parliamentary seat of Langkawi.

The announcement was made by PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail at the Jelajah Harapan Langkawi at the roundabout near the Langkawi International Airport in Padang Matsirat.

Dr Wan Azizah also announced that Dr Mahathir’s son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz, would be contesting two seats – the Jitra state seat and Jerlun parliamentary seat.

Other candidates announced tonight were Johari Bulat and Firdaus Ahmad for the Ayer Hangat and Kuah state seats, respectively, both of which are under the Langkawi parliamentary seat.

Present yesterday were Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

In the 13th general election, the Langkawi seat was won by Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Nawawi Ahmad, who defeated PKR’s Ahmad Abdullah and independent candidate Marina Hussein with an 11,861-vote majority.

Both the Ayer Hangat and Kuah seats were also won by BN candidates Datuk Mohd Rawi Abd Hamid and Nor Saidi Nanyan.

Rawi defeated Pas candidate Zubir Ahmad with a majority of 5,311 votes while Nor Saidi had a 6,371-vote majority over PKR’s Datuk Ahmad Kasim.

The other candidates for the parliamentary seats in Kedah are Datuk Ir Amiruddin Hamzah (Kubang Pasu), Wan Saiful Wan Jan (Pendang), Mohd Taufik Yaacob (Baling), and Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi (Jerai).

As for the state seats, Datuk A Aziz Mohamud (Ayer Hitam), Halimahton Saadiah Saad (Bukit Kayu Hitam), Datuk Ir Amiruddin Hamzah (Anak Bukit), Mohd Aizad Roslan (Bukit Lada), Syed Fadzil Syed Embun (Kuala Nerang), Abdul Razak Khamis (Sungai Tiang), Mohd Nazari Abu Hassan (Jeneri), Abdul Rahim Kechik (Bayu),

Mohd Saffuan Sabari (Guar Chempedak), Mejar (B) Annuar Abd Hamid (Tanjung Dawai), and Datuk Azimi Daim (Bandar Baru), were named.
