Next Youth and Sports minister should be a younger person: Khairy

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin hopes the next candidate for the Youth and Sports minister’s post would come from the younger generation.

Khairy, who is the current minister, said the decision was up to the Prime Minister but he felt that by appointing a young person Barisan National would be seen as the party of the future.

“It could not be me as I am not young anymore… We need more young people to lead the country as we must be seen as the party of the future and other ministerial positions should also be filled by the younger generation,” he said during a live BH dialogue session at the New Straits Times Press here today.

Khairy also commented on the newly launched BN youth manifesto which promises more job opportunities for the youth.

“I am positive that BN can match the job opportunities based on the applicants’ qualifications and experience,” he said.

Khairy also lambasted the manifesto launched by the opposition claiming that the manifesto was unrealistic.

“The opposition’s promise to provide free live English Premier League broadcast will cost them millions to be the official broadcaster and same goes for their promise to make the country toll free, and giving free education will cost them billions.

“Unlike the manifesto that BN youth offered, it is more realistic which the government can afford,” he said.

Khairy added that in drawing up the BN youth manifesto, he sought approval from the finance ministry and economic planning unit to ensure it was achievable.
