EC denies early votes counting in Bagan Datuk

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) denies that it had conducted tabulation for Bagan Datuk parliamentary seat after the early voting session on Saturday.

The EC chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah stressed that all ballot papers from the early voting would only be tabulated on May 9 from 4pm at the tabulation centres set by the commission.

He said before the early counting process was conducted, all stakeholders especially the candidates would be officially notified to attend and witness the process.

“Investigation by EC showed that all election personnel have adhered to the stipulated procedures. Once the early voting ended at 5pm, they packed all the ballot boxes in front of all candidate agents, and brought the boxes to a secured place in Hutan Melintang police station.

Mohd Hashim added that there was a group of people, including a candidate from a party, making nuisance during the process of keeping the ballot boxes as they claimed that the election staff had misappropriated with the ballot boxes.

“For the record, the total number of registered early voters at Hutan Melintang Camp were 1,541 people. However, there were 508 early voters had applied to vote via post,” he said in a statement.

He said the total number of registered early voters on May 5 were 1,033, but only 825 people turned up to cast their votes, while the remaining 208 voters did not show up to vote.

“EC condemned those who caused nuisance at the election personnel. We also vehemently deny the false accusation as it is only to create a fuss among people and to attract voters.” he said.
