Dr M attempts to tarnish EC image

LANGKAWI: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was seen trying to create a bad impression towards Election Commission (EC) by portraying that the agency has formed a malicious plan with Barisan Nasional (BN) to control the 14th General Election (GE14) result.

The PKR candidate for Langkawi parliamentary seat claimed that he received tip-off from certain constituencies including Langkawi that many voters were unable to cast their votes.

He further casted doubts among the people by claiming that EC had intentionally delayed the balloting process which resulted with many voters unable to perform their duties as voters.

Dr Mahathir also said that he attempted to get the deadline for constituents to cast their votes extended.

“Just like today, we saw many people at the polling centres, but they were unable to vote due to insufficient time even when I requested the EC to extend the period,” he told a Press conference earlier today.

He also cited the redelineation process and vote-buying claims.

Earlier today, the EC chairman Hashim Abdullah had said that EC could not extend the voting time as the 5pm deadline had been gazetted and votes cast past that time could be challenged in court.

EC has also clarified that the redelineation process was carried out in accordance to the Federal Constitution which allowed the exercise to be carried out every eight years.
