Zahid ready to face rivals for party's top post

KUALA LUMPUR: Former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi hinted that he is ready to face any rivals vying for the Umno presidency in the upcoming party polls.

Speaking to reporters after breaking fast with party supreme council members tonight, Zahid said he and fellow party vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein remain committed to have all posts in the party open for contest.

However when asked, Zahid said he did not know if there are other names in the line-up to run for the party's top posts.

"We do not know... the nomination deadline is on June 17.

"Hishammuddin and I are of the stand that all posts in the party are open for contests."

Utusan Online reported two days ago that Zahid had moved to contest for the party's top post, as he is currently tasked with presidential duties following Datuk Seri Najib Razak's resignation as party president.

Earlier, Umno top leaders gathered for a breaking fast event at their headquarters here in PWTC.

After the breaking of fast which was held behind closed doors, leaders then proceeded to perform terawih prayers.
