#KJ4President gains traction as Khairy Jamaluddin confirms candidacy

KUALA LUMPUR: Netizens have begun a Twitter campaign with the hashtag #KJ4President in support of Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, who announced his bid for the party presidency on Instagram today.

Without explicitly declaring his support for Khairy, Umno Communication Unit member Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan on Twitter praised the use of the hashtag and said: "#KJ4President. Now that's out of the box. Totally!"

Attempts are being made to reach Abdul Rahman for comment.

The hashtag is fast gaining popularity on social media, with several Netizens openly throwing their support behind the former Youth and Sports Minister, who initially announced his intention to contest the Umno vice-president’s post in the upcoming party elections later this month.

“Go..!!! Three-cornered fights will get you all the votes from the younger generation. The old generation will (be) split between Zahid and Ku Li,” said Safie Mohamed.

It will be a three-cornered fight for the Umno presidency should Khairy throw his hat into the ring.

The other two contenders are Umno-vice president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Gua Musang member of parliament Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who is vying for the top post for the second time in 30 years.

The deadline for the submission of nomination papers is today and Umno is scheduled to hold a press conference on the highly-anticipated polls at 5.30pm today.

Another Netizen, Mohamad Syahir, said Khairy’s candidacy is the "best thing that could ever happen to Umno".

Auzani Fikry, meanwhile, said: “I didn’t say KJ is blameless but so was Tun Daim Zainuddin and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim previously. They all made mistakes but Khairy is the best candidate Umno has.”
