Accusation of money politics extreme, says Sungai Petani Umno chief

SUNGAI PETANI: Datuk Shahanim Mohamad Yusoff is unfazed over the resignation of several Sungai Petani Umno division leaders.

The Sungai Petani Umno division chief also said accusing her of being involved in money politics was not only extreme but baseless.

"They have to show solid proof before accusing me of being involved in money politics and they can also send a report to the Umno disciplinary board to have me fired," she said today.

Her response came following the resignation of Sungai Petani Umno's vice chief, the chiefs of the division's Wanita, Puteri and Youth wings as well as over 40 of the division's committee members.

"I assume their action is malicious and they are trying to defame me because they can't accept their leader's defeat," she said when contacted, here.

Earlier it was reported that Sungai Petani Umno division vice chief Muhammad Effendi Mashum, the division's Wanita chief Wan Mohalina Wan Mohamad, Youth chief Mohd Rahmat Darus asnd Puteri chief Mashitoh Mohamad Yusoff had resigned after winning their posts in the party polls yesterday.

They said it was not fair for the new leadership of the division to be given mandate, claiming this was because there had been elements of money politics in the election.

Shahanim said she would hold a meeting at the division level to appoint new chiefs for the wings but hoped the resignation letters of those who had voiced their intention to leave would be handed in soon.

"I am not affected by their resignations, infact I am waiting for their official resignation letter so I can appoint new chiefs for the wings who are willing to work with me in order to carry out the duties of Umno division," she said.

Shahahim said she was confident that the mandate given to her by the delegates was because they wanted change in Umno, apart from appreciating her contribution to the party and the rakyat for the past 17 years.
