Three names submitted to PKR's central committee for Sungai Kandis by-election

SHAH ALAM: The names of three potential candidates for the Sungai Kandis state seat by-election on Aug 4 have been presented to the PKR central executive committee.

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the state political bureau held a meeting yesterday to discuss the matter and had forwarded the names of the three PKR members to the party’s top leadership.

He declined to reveal the names of the shortlisted candidates, however, described one of them as “a PKR leader from Selangor.”

“He is a credible candidate. The suggestion (of his name) came from the Selangor PKR committee.

“Let the central committee decide (on the candidate to field for the by-election), especially the president (Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail) and top management,” he told the NSTP when met at the Selangor state secretariat building (SUK), here, today.

The three names speculated to be the potential candidates were Kota Anggerik assemblyman Yaakob Sapari, former PKR Kota Damansara coordinator Mohd Razlan Jalaluddin and Mikael Eskandar.

However, Selangor PKR chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali when asked to comment on the three names yesterday, said he did not want to speculate.

The Sungai Kandis state seat, which comes under the Kota Raja parliamentary seat was left vacant following the death of its three-term assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei, 50, who died on July 2 of cancer.

Azmin, who is also the Economic Affairs Minister had said he was confident that Pakatan Harapan and PKR would be able to retain the Sungai Kandis seat based on Shuhaimi’s performance and track record.

In the 14th General Election, Sungai Kandis saw a four-cornered fight where Shuhaimi defended his seat against BN’s Datuk Kamaruzzaman Johari, Pas’ Mohd Yusof Abdullah, and Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s Hanafiah Husin.

Shuhaimi won with 23,998 votes, with a majority of 12,480, defeating Kamaruzzaman who obtained 11,518 votes. Yusof received 7,573 votes, while Hanafiah got 76 votes.
