Noh Omar: Why hasn't Pakatan Harapan abolished tolls, reduced cost of living?

SHAH ALAM: The Pakatan Harapan government has lied to the people by failing to implement measures to reduce the cost of living, Umno supreme council member Tan Sri Noh Omar claimed today.

“More than 70 days have passed but the people did not see any decrease in the prices of goods.

"PH has failed to live up to the promises it made in its manifesto. What happened to plans to abolish polls and reduce the cost of living? They zero-rated the Goods and Services Tax but reintroduced the Sales and Services Tax (SST)," he said during the "Miskin Bandar" dialogue here last night.

Beginning Sept 1, the provision of services will be taxed at six per cent under the reintroduced SST, while the sales of goods will incur a 10 per cent tax.

“Instead of working towards fulfilling their pledges, the government often talks about how previous leadership left the country in huge debt. This is merely a move to cover up (their inability to fulfil their promises).

“Since PH came to power, the only things that went down is the (prices of) palm oil, rubber, tomatoes, as well as the currency and stock market," Noh said.

Despite being in power in Selangor for the past 10 years, he said, the PH government failed to provide basic necessities and affordable housing to the people, especially the urban poor.

“They were merely empty promises made to garner votes. People are disappointed with PH. Look at the poor housing and developmental plan in Sungai Kandis. What have PH leaders been doing in Selangor?” Noh asked.

He also urged voters in Sungai Kandis to vote for Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Lokman Noor Adam, saying the latter will be the "voice of the people" in the state legislative assembly.

“I urge voters to wake up. Do not fall for the empty promises made by the egoistic PH leaders,” he added.

Meanwhile, Selangor Wanita Umno chief Datuk Rosni Sohar, who was present at the dialogue, said the people of Sungai Kandis, especially women, care more about safety and infrastructure development in the constituency.

They also wish for more employment opportunities to help them lead better and more independent lives, she said.

“We can see people are starting to realise and feel agitated looking at PH. I hope they will vote for BN in the by-election,” she added.

The Sungai Kandis by-election was held following the death of incumbent elected representative Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei on July 2.

Lokman will be contesting against PKR’s Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni and independent candidate Murthy Krishnasamy. Polling has been fixed on Aug 4.
