Minister's label of youth NGOs as 'political lackeys' slammed

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth has slammed Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s statement in Parliament today that labelled several youth non-governmental organisations as ‘political lackeys’.

Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said Syed Saddiq should be more careful when making statements in Dewan Rakyat.

“It is irresponsible for someone who claims to be patriotic to accuse youth NGOs such as Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semanjung, Belia 4B and Malaysian Youth Council of being political lackeys.

“As he has been appointed to Cabinet, he (Syed Saddiq) needs to display his patriotism.

“Don’t tell me you are going to label these NGOs each time you are criticised by them,” he said after chairing an Umno Youth Meeting today at Menara Dato’ Onn, here.

“They should be judged fairly and not labelled indiscriminately as political lackeys in Parliament. What is more, the accusation came from a minister.

“After two months in government, Pakatan Harapan members of parliament are making statements which I feel are irresponsible.”

The youth NGOs had voiced concern over the development of young talents so that they could be involved in the country’s administration and eadership.
