Anwar: Migration of Umno members to Bersatu will not affect PKR

KUALA TERENGGANU: The migration of Umno members to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) will neither threaten nor worry PKR.

The party’s incoming president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the migration of Umno members to Bersatu will not affect PKR.

Instead, Anwar stressed that he is committed at strengthening ties with Bersatu.

“For me, the relationship between PKR and Bersatu is extremely good. I am not suspicious, as PKR is still a strong party.

“The most important thing is that we maintain good ties and mutual trust with Bersatu. My personal relationship with Tun (Dr Mahathir Mohamad) is very good," he said at a press conference after attending the ‘Agenda Malaysia Baru Bersama PKR’ with Terengganu PKR members and supporters, here, today.

Present were Terengganu PKR chairman and some 200 party members as well as party supporters in the state.

The meeting was the first such to take place in four years. The last time Anwar visited Terengganu was in 2014.

On whether Prime Minister Tun Dr Mohathir Mohamad had given him advice on his move to contest in the Port Dickson by-election, Anwar said the Prime Minister backed his move.

“When we informed him of Port Dickson, Tun (Dr Mahathir) quickly supported the move, he was understanding and knows that I will do a good job,” Anwar said.

Meanwhile in his speech, Anwar took to task those who were seeking to pit him against Dr Mahathir.

"We had been fighting for 20 years but in the interests of the people, we were able to make-up with each other.

"Me and Dr Mahathir have become good friends now, so why are those down there now fighting?,” he asked.
