Pas agrees with law on mandatory assets declaration

KOTA BARU: Pas has no problem agreeing to a plan to introduce a new law warranting a mandatory declaration of assets by elected representatives and senior government officials under the Jusa C grade and above.

Several Pas Members of Parliament (MPs), when contacted by NSTP today, said they had no objection to the proposal.

However, Pas secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said Pas would study the bill first.

He said Pas needed to understand the real reason for the law to be introduced before they agreed to it.

“Basically Pas has no problem with the idea but, of course, we have to look at the bill first to know what actually is the government’s or the legislation’s intention,” he said.

Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said such plan should be accepted as long as it benefits the people.

“Personally, I have no problem to accept or support the move as long as the declaration is transparent and welcomed by the rakyat,” said Ahmad Fadhli who is also Pas vice Youth chief.

Tumpat MP Datuk Che Abdullah Mat Nawi said Pas was always transparent in this kind of issue.

“The plan must be supported to show that Pas is honest and transparent when it involves this kind of matter or assets declaration,” he said.

It was reported exclusively in NSTP yesterday that a new law warranting a mandatory declaration of assets by elected representatives was in the works.

If passed, the law would also cover senior government officials under the Jusa C grade and above.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) deputy chief commissioner (prevention) Datuk Shamshun Bahari Mohd Jamil said the new legislation was currently in the proposal stage.

The new law, when adopted, would also be expanded to include opposition members of parliament and state assemblymen.
