Major hitch in Melaka PKR polls as 60pct of votes 'disappear'

MELAKA: Up to 2,000 votes are ‘missing’ in five out of six PKR divisions in Melaka where state party elections were held yesterday, the party’s Central Selection Committee has revealed.

The unexplained disappearance of approximately 60 per cent of votes registered through the e-voting system has therefore halted the tallying of the final results.

“Last night, I was in Negri Sembilan till 3am with the technical team to investigate the missing 2,000 votes.

“At the Jasin division… voter turnout was high, but (votes) counted were only 40 per cent,” state PKR chairman Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin said when contacted by NSTP today.

The six Melaka PKR divisions which completed their e-voting selections on Saturday were Masjid Tanah, Alor Gajah, Tangga Batu, Bukit Katil, Kota Melaka and Jasin.

The unofficial count from the six divisions as of 7.30pm yesterday had the Reformasi 20 Tahun group, led by Rafizi Ramli, leading ahead of Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali in the contest for the deputy president post.

In a Twitter post yesterday, Rafizi claimed to have garnered 55 per cent of votes in Melaka and 52 per cent of votes in Negri Sembilan.

“Thank you, friends, from PKR N9 and Melaka. The unofficial results have shown that I won in both states. Still waiting for the final results,” he said.

Rafizi’s challenger, Shamsul Iskandar, responded by saying Rafizi has no proof to his claims, as the official results have not been determined.

“No, his claim is not true. His claim has no proof. Not official. Five divisions are having problems right now and I hope that can be settled soon,” he said.

In a video posted on social media, believed to have been shot at the Tangga Batu division, Shamsul defends the e-voting system which he says has been in operation at 40 per cent of locations nationwide in the PKR 2018 elections.

“The e-voting system is still new. At this stage, we can’t turn back, we can only improve it,” he said.
