Anwar: PKR polls must continue, no more delays

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite the hiccups, there can be no more delays with the PKR election process, said its incoming president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“The process has to continue, we can’t delay it any longer,” he stressed to reporters at the Parliament lobby, here, today.

He said that the weakness of the e-voting system has been acknowledged from the beginning, including by him, as hundreds of complaints await the party's scrutiny.

“I have made these statements numerous times, it’s just that I do not question the central election committee’s decision,” Anwar said in reference to the Julau divisional results that is now accepted by the committee after it was held back earlier when it was found that the tablets used during the polling process were infected by malware.

He also said that the party also allowed for those who were unsatisfied with the results to raise their objections.

The election process however has to continue even though some complaints were now being investigated by the police and the Malaysian Communications And Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

“Let them do their job but the polling process has to continue as it's a democratic process,” he added, assuring that all complaints would be investigated transparently.

The PKR polls have been riddled with issues such as allegations of phantom voters, the use of “jammers” to block internet access as well as outbreaks of fights.

Meanwhile PKR vice-presidential candidate Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin said that he could not comment on the decision by the election committee.

He however said that matters such as technical faults that were raised by the committee have to be answered by them.

“I understand that the spokesperson for the software that infected the tablets claims it was not a threat but the election committee head Datuk Rashid Din had initially claimed that there was tampering. So these details have to be explained by them,” Shamsul Iskandar said.

He echoed Anwar by saying that the decision of the committee may be raised in its political bureau meeting tonight.
