Pas Syura Council: Pas and Umno have no choice but to work together due to circumstances

KOTA BHARU: Pas and Umno have no other option but to work together due to current circumstances faced by both parties, Pas Syura council secretary Datuk Dr Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh said.

He, however, also admitted that the co-operation of the once sworn enemies benefitted Pas more in its Islamic-based struggles.

“As of now it is also benefitting the Muslims in this country from various aspects.

“However, the Pas Umno unity plans have not been discussed in specific terms,” he said.

Nik Zawawi said as far as the council was concerned any co-operation between Pas and Umno should benefit Muslims.

He added that the Syura council was also not against Pas leaders forming alliances with any political party in the country.

“Pas has established relations with Umno way before the last general election. This shows we are open to anyone who wants to work with us.

“I can’t say much about our future plans, especially in facing the next general elections just yet... we will just have to wait and see what the reaction is from our existing co-operation (with Umno) first,” he said, adding this would include the reaction from supporters and leaders of both parties.

Meanwhile, in another development, Pas secretary general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had gone overboard in ordering its departments at its headquarters in Jalan Raja Laut to close and staff to stop work on Saturday in view of the anti-Icerd rally.

It was reported that an internal memo was sent to all heads of departments within DBKL to close their offices at the headquarters on that day.

It said all official DBKL vehicles parked at Menara DBKL 1 and 2 will also be moved to its Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Department in Jalan Cheras.

Takiyuddin said the directive had caused unnecessary anguish among the people.

“I have seen the memo which has since gone viral...there was no need for it.

“We are taking part in the rally not to cause any provocation,” he said.
