Zahid: I will only resign if.....

KUALA LUMPUR: Embattled Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he would only step down from his post if a majority of the party delegates demand that he does so during a special assembly.

Zahid, who remains adamant about his legitimacy as the Umno’s head honcho despite the exodus of top leaders and parliamentarians from the party, called for members to remain united in the face of current challenges.

“I will not bow down to demands by certain people who want me to step down (as president).

“I will only (step down) based on Umno rules and constitution, which dictates that (it can be done if) two-third of the delegates during a special party general assembly want me to step down.

“I will also adhere to the request by party grassroots who want Umno to be strengthened and supported after the 14th general election,” Zahid said in a statement.

He also expressed confidence that Umno as an opposition party, still receive major support from the people and members.

“There is an increase in support in order to strengthen Umno.”

Zahid also said Umno would continue working with Pas on the Islamic agenda while maintaining its respect for the interests of other races, religions and cultures.

“Umno rejects cooperation with DAP and will not compromise with the agenda to sideline the Malays and Islam, which is either being done subtly or openly.

“Umno at all levels must close ranks regardless of their disputes, differing opinions or stand for the sake of Umno’s unity and responsibilities for religion, race and country.”

Party leaders have resigned en mass over a crisis of confidence in Zahid’s stewardship of Umno, which saw a number of lawmakers resign to be independents or flock to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

They are calling for Zahid to immediately step down or call for new party election to pick the party’s next president.

At least six Umno parliamentarians have resigned as of yesterday, after an exodus in Sabah a few days earlier.
