62 GE14 candidates fail to submit expenditure statement

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 62 candidates failed to submit their respective statement of expenditure for the 14th General Election (GE14).

Election Commission chairman Azhar Azizan Harun said the breakdown of the figure shows it comprising - 14 Parliament and 48 parliament candidates.

He said candidates should have submitted their respective statement of expenditure by June 28.

The EC had received 687 nominations for parliment and 1,646 nominations for state assembly seats in GE14.

Azhar said the Election Offences Act 1954 stipulates that candidates contesting or election agents must submit the statement of expenditure to the state EC director within 31 days of after the announcement of the election results which in this case was gazetted on May 28.

In this regard, EC had lodged a police report on the candidates who failed to submit the statements for further legal actions, he added.

Azhar said under Section 23 of the Election Offences Act 1954, failure to submit statements would forbid them from attending or voting in the Dewan Rakyat or state-assembly proceedings.

"They cannot contest in any elections for five years. They could also be charged," he added.
