'Dissolve Umno, come join Pas' [NSTTV]

KOTA BHARU: Pas vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah has called for Umno to be dissolved following the troubles faced by the party.

Umno, he said, should be dissolved and its members should join Pas in order to defend Islam’s interest in the country.

Mohd Amar said he first made this suggestion shortly after the 14th general election, saying that Umno no longer has a political future and should be dissolved.

“It’s time has now ended. We (Pas - Umno) are friends, and thus, we invite them to join Pas for the sake of Islam.

“We had invited them to join us in the past. It is now the right time for this to happen.

“Pas has opened its doors a long time ago. Anyone who is willing to fight for the sake of religion and the country can join Pas,” he told reporters after the state exco meeting in Kompleks Kota Darul Naim, here on Wednesday.

Mohd Amar was commenting on the crisis enveloping Umno, which on Tueday saw Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi surrendering the party’s presidency duties to his deputy, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan.

Mohd Amar said Islam is the only thing which differentiates Pas from other parties.

“We may lack in other areas, but our party’s strength lies in Islam. We are open to everyone.

“The challenge now is on how to ‘market’ the Islamic struggle so that it is accepted by all in Malaysia. We want people to support Pas based on its ideals, not based on what we can promise because we cannot give any promises, unlike others.”
