Ismail Sabri is new opposition chief

KUALA LUMPUR: The opposition bloc has picked Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as its new parliamentary leader.

The Bera federal lawmaker replaces Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who is on leave from his positions as Barisan Nasional chairman and Umno president.

Zahid, who is the Bagan Datuk member of parliament, was made opposition leader after BN’s defeat in the 14th General Election.

Ismail’s appointment was announced by acting Umno president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

“Ismail Sabri was picked based on his seniority and (position in the) hierarchy (in BN). Pas has agreed to the appointment as well.

“The opposition parties in Sarawak have been informed on the matter,” Mohamad told a media conference today after chairing the monthly Umno supreme council meeting today.

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid has been appointed chief whip in place of Ismail.
