Sabah Umno to back PBS in Sandakan by-election

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Umno will back the opposition Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) in the Sandakan parliamentary by-election, nomination for which is tomorrow and polling on May 11.

Its chairman, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, who is also the Kinabatangan Member of Parliament, said he had spoken to PBS president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili on the matter.

The DAP has named Vivian Wong Shir Yee, 30, as its candidate for the by-election, necessitated by the death of the MP and Shir Yee’s father Datuk Stephen Wong Tien Fatt on March 28.

PBS has named Linda Tsen as its candidate for the polls.

In GE14, Wong had obtained 19,094 votes, defeating Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Lim Ming Hoo who garnered 8,996 votes.

Sandakan has 39,777 registered voters – 49 per cent Chinese, 44 per cent Muslim Bumiputera and six per cent non-Muslim Bumiputera.
