Dr M mystified by Trump over US-China trade war

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today admitted being mystified by President Donald Trump over the ongoing trade war between the United States and China.

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman said, unlike the US president, China had taken a firm stand on the current situation between the two major economic powers.

Dr Mahathir said he was not optimistic about the trade war.

“I really do not know what he is talking about. Because one day, Trump says he does not want to negotiate. (But) the next day, he says he wants to talk and negotiate.

“I, however, know that China has a firm stand. If you impose high taxes on their exports, then they will do the same on imports from the US,” he told reporters after chairing the PH presidential council meeting.

Present were PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

Asked what Malaysia could do in regards to the trade war, Dr Mahathir joked: “Well we would like to go to war with the US, but we do not have the capacity. So, we just sit and watch.”
