Zahid: Umno and Pas now 'betrothed'

SUNGAI BESAR: Umno leaders and members must set aside differences of opinion over the party’s efforts to collaborate with Pas, as the two are now “engaged”.

The call was made by Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who said that the move to unite the two former nemeses requires the efforts and commitment of all party members.

The union would ensure that Umno and Pas, together with other Barian Nasional (BN) members, will wrest Putrajaya and the states from Pakatan Harapan in the 15th General Election.

“We are engaged to Pas. (But as) the betrothed, we will be faced with many tests. (We) also need to be careful to prevent from being hurt. As such, both parties need to take care of each other,” he said.

Zahid said this in his speech at the opening of the Sungai Besar Umno division delegates’ meeting here, today.

The Bagan Datuk Member of Parliament added that whatever their point of view, Umno members and leaders should focus on the benefits which a political union with Pas would bring.

“Would it not be good if the household of (Umno and Pas) is peaceful? (Even when) differences of opinion crop up, a solution needs to be found as soon as possible,” he said.

Zahid added that Umno celebrates differences of opinion, but he warned against such differences being allowed to cause disunity among members.

"We need to strengthen our brotherhood, not just among Umno leaders and party members, but… with Pas and BN component partners," he said.
