Back door govt formation is disrespectful to people's mandate

KUALA LUMPUR: The move to form a new government through the back door has been deemed as being disrespectful to the people's mandate returned in the general election.

Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof said even if the matter was broached and discussed it still amounted to disrespecting the people’s mandate.

“The government today is the government which was established through a democratic process.

“Everyone should respect the decision and there does not arise any effort to form a government through the back door, which in turn would undermine the mandate given by the people.

“We are doing our job in the hope that the policies that we are bringing about will be accepted. More importantly its creates an impact among the people and brings about changes,” said the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department after the Federal Territories ‘Kembara Rahmah Zakat’ event here today.

Amanah communications director Khalid Abdul Samad described the plot to establish a new government, if true, is an undignified move.

However the Federal Territories Minister was confident that the plot would fail because Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties will hold true to their promise to jointly lead and govern the country.

Speaking at a press conference here, Khalid said the plot was an effort to establish a new government through the back door and "although it is said to be (that of) Kongres Maruah Melayu (Malay Dignity Congress), it is an effort that is undignified".

"I urge the opposition to respect the mandate given by the people who want Pakatan Harapan to govern … don't betray this mandate with efforts to establish a government through the back door," he said.

On Oct 15, the PH secretariat issued a statement, urging former Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein to put a stop to a campaign aimed at establishing a government without the participation of DAP and Amanah.

The statement was signed by PH chief secretary Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Wira Marzuki Yahya, Amanah secretary-general Datuk Wira Mohd Anuar Mohd Tahir and DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke Siew Fook.

However, Hishammuddin denied the allegation.

In Selayang, its member of Parliament, William Leong also echoed Mujahid and Khalid’s views on the matter.

He said anyone conspiring to form a new government without the DAP and Amanah was tantamount to betraying the people’s mandate.

Leong said the plot was said to had been hatched in a bid to prevent PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from becoming the next Prime Minister and if this was allowed, it would amount to a volte-face of the people’s wish which was translated in the 14th General Election (GE14) outcome.

“What is important is that the people have made a choice in GE14. The people’s decision must be respected, do not brush aside the people’s wish in a bid to establish another government,” he said at the ‘Jom Cari Kerja’ carnival and E-Sport FIFA 2020 Championship here today.

On whether any quarters had approached him to back the new government, Leong stressed that his support was quite obvious.

“I am from PKR and our President is Datuk Seri Anwar. Our party passed a resolution in the PKR Congress recently that the eighth Prime Minister is Datuk Seri Anwar, no one else.”
