Brace for intense fight in Tanjung Piai, says Srikandi chief

PUTRAJAYA: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Women or Srikandi chief Datuk Seri Rina Harun has cautioned Pakatan Harapan against being over confident in facing the upcoming Tanjung Piai by-election.

Instead, she urged the pact to always be in a state of readiness to face a possible intense fight to defend the Tanjung Piai seat.

Rina, however, felt confident that victory was within PH's reach, citing the initial observation among women voters whom she said were still with the pact, despite many issues which had to be dealt with.

"No doubt there will be an intense fight and we cannot be too comfortable," she told reporters after visiting the last day of the Desa Entrepreneur Carnival (KUD@KPLB) 2019 here.

She said SriKandi had submitted four names including a local for the top leadership to consider as potential candidates for the Tanjung Piai by-election.

On issues that were raised by the electorate, Rina said one of them involved DAP which had been addressed by the top leadership including Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

"Our focus now is to assist the chosen (PH) candidate to defeat the opposition candidate. It doesn't matter if the opposition candidate is from Umno or even MCA."

She added that the Srikandi machinery had been deployed early at the grassroot level.

It was reported PH was expected to announce its candidate for the Tanjung Piai by-election on Oct 30, two days before nomination.

The by-election was called following the death of Tanjung Piai MP Datuk Dr Md Farid Md Rafik, 42, who was also deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department following a heart attack last month.

In the 14th General Election, Dr Farid won the parliamentary seat with a 524-vote majority over Datuk Seri Wee Jeck Seng (BN-MCA) and Nordin Othman (Pas).

The Election Commission had set the nomination day on Nov 2 and polling day on Nov 16. Early voting would be on Nov 12.
