Muhyiddin wins Bersatu Pagoh division chief post unchallenged

JOHOR BARU: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin won the Pagoh division chief post uncontested after nominations closed at 2pm on Sunday.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal has also won the division deputy chief post unchallenged, it was learnt.

Informed party sources told Bernama that Johor Bersatu chairman and Tebrau division chief Mazlan Bujang will be challenged by his deputy Saiful Ahmad and also the division Srikandi (women’s wing) head, Noorlihan Ariffin in a three-cornered contest in the upcoming party elections.

Meanwhile, Johor Bersatu election committee chairman Ahmad Daud chairman said all 26 divisions in the state were qualified to send representatives to the party’s inaugural elections.

He said the nomination process in all 26 divisions ran smoothly today.

Until 7pm, the state party headquarters had already received nomination papers from 16 divisions, he said, while the rest were expected to be handed over by 10pm.

He said there were three-cornered contests in 80 percent of the divisions while two more divisions will also see five-cornered fights.

In KUALA LUMPUR , Bersatu’s Election Committee chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said the nomination for seats in the party’s Supreme Leadership Council (MPT) will take place on March 16.

He said the nominations, which would open from 10 am to 3 pm on that day, would be the posts of chairman, president, deputy president and MPT members.

Meanwhile, he said the nomination process for 7,371 posts in 189 divisions, which was held simultaneously from 9 am to 2 pm on Sunday, went smoothly.

It involved 2,835 posts at all divisions with 15 posts for each division and 2,268 posts each for the women and youth wings, involving 12 posts for each division, he said at the party headquarters.

He said the candidates would be given three days, beginning tomorrow to withdraw from contesting, with the list of the candidates eligible to contest to be finalised on Feb 1 for display to members.

“Screening (of candidates) will be done to ensure the eligibility of candidates, that they are not bankrupt, with criminal record, party disciplinary case, etc.

“The balloting process for all the posts will be held at the branch meetings to be held from Feb 15 to March 29. The ballot papers have been sent to the respective branches nationwide,” he added. - Bernama
