PM: Up to gov't to realise rosy forecast for Malaysia's economy

PUTRAJAYA: It is up to the government and its workers to ensure that the World Bank and International Monetary Fund's (IMF) positive forecast for Malaysia's economy is realised, said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The World Bank and IMF recently predicted that Malaysia will be one of the first countries to recover from the Covid-19 outbreak at the end of next year.

Muhyiddin said speed in administrative works will be an important factor in healing the country's economy, aside from strategic and firm decision-making processes.

"What's important is for us to resolve our economic problems. The World Bank said Malaysia may be one of the first counties to recover, with a growth rate of 5.6 per cent by the end of 2021.

"This is our hope, and it is a good one, as compared to the growth rates of other countries in this region, as well as some other developed countries.

"Whether or not it will be a reality depends on our efforts in making strategic and firm decisions because these will ensure the survival of all economic sectors," he said.

Muhyiddin was speaking to his departmental staff during a monthly assembly here, today. This was Muhyiddin's first address to staff of the Prime Minister's Department since assuming office on March 1.

The prime minister also said the burden of responsibility does not only lie with ministers and federal civil servants, but also state governments and local authorities.

Aside from that, Muhyiddin also pledged to continue the works of the previous administration in fighting corruption and abuse of power among civil servants.

"I will not compromise on this aspect, which is why the previously-agreed to Anti-Corruption Action Plan will be continued in this administration.

"We want to ensure that all our administrative work is done in accordance with the rule of law, and I don't want us to be seen as abusing our powers.

"There is a limit as to how far we can go when performing our duties," he added.
