Pas asks for some relaxations in Melaka election campaign

MELAKA: Pas is asking the Health Ministry for some relaxations for all political parties during the upcoming Melaka state election campaigning period which will begin on Nov 8.

Its Melaka commissioner, Datuk Kamarudin Sidek said while the campaigns can be done through social media platforms, it would not be as effective for voters who are not tech-savvy.

He said it would be much easier for such voters, who are categorised in Stream 1, to get direct information on the election, especially for political parties to explain the current issues affecting the people.

Kamarudin also said Stream 1 voters usually consists of those who have issues concerning their physical aspects such as blurred vision which would make it difficult for them to stare at screens for a long time.

"Pas would like to ask the Health Ministry to give some relaxations for the campaigns by (allowing them to) meet face to face especially for Stream 1 voters who are older.

"Although face to face campaigns may happen, everyone must adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOP) to avoid daily Covid-19 cases from spiking," he told Berita Harian today.

Yesterday, the Health Ministry said all election-related assemblies were prohibited from today until Nov 27.

Its minister Khairy Jamaluddin said such assemblies include the launching of election machineries.

Kamarudin said Pas' election machinery was ready to go all out with its social media campaigns.

On seat allocations between Pas and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia in the Perikatan Nasional coalition, the Islamist party confirmed that a meeting on the matter would be held tomorrow.

"God willing, we will meet tomorrow to decide on this as we have been discussing it in several meetings before. We are confident we can reach a mutual consensus."

However, he said there has yet to be any formal negotiations with Umno on seat allocations.

According to Kamarudin, this was because Umno has yet to provide a concrete and firm decision on the Umno-Pas collaboration ahead of the Melaka state election.

The Election Commission has set Nov 20 as polling day for the Melaka state election with nominations on Nov 8 and early voting on Nov 16.
