Umno being targeted for wanting election to be held soon

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno has become an opposition target for its move to call the 15th General Election as soon as possible.

Party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the opposition parties were feeling fearful, worried and anxious over the move to call for snap polls.

"Umno has been labelled as arrogant, disrespectful of the Federal Constitution and treasonous.

"What words will be presented to the King that count as being treasonous or not inline with the Federal Constitution and (words) which go behind the King's back?

"Umno, in its every move, acts according to the law and the Federal Constitution because we are not a 'cap ayam' (inferior quality) political party.

"Please don't fool the people by spinning (facts) and manipulate as the rakyat already knows the truth," he said in a Facebook posting this evening.

The Bagan Datuk Member of Parliament also questioned as to which party wanted to sign the Rome Statute and the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination ratification, which jeopardises the Malay Rulers' powers; and had disrespected the Federal Constitution as well as disobeying the King regarding the Emergency Ordinance issue.

Zahid instead claimed that Barisan Nasional's opponents' agenda in regards these matters was treasonous and they sought to change the values and foundations of the country for their own political interests.

The act of the opposition objecting to GE15 being held by coming up with excuses has never occurred before, said Zahid.

"We believe that if the opposition is confident that they are in a winning position, they will not want to delay the GE15 even by a minute.

"Why would 32 million Malaysians want to allow the opposition, including Nga Kor Ming and the DAP, to determine our future?

"We must rise again to chart what is best for the country in GE15. This is an opportunity for all of us," said Zahid.

The Umno Supreme Council on Friday night said it had decided that the GE15 must be held this year.

Its secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the council had insisted that Parliament must be dissolved as soon as possible.

Prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, he said, will seek the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the dissolution of Parliament, in line with Article 40(1) of the Federal Constitution.

Ahmad, however, did not disclose the date for the dissolution of Parliament that would be presented to the King.

Ismail Sabri on Saturday said the date for the GE15 will be announced and urged the people to be patient.

He also said the party's call to hold the GE15 soon was not new and that they want to return the mandate to the people.
