Saifuddin confirms RoS letter to Umno

KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has confirmed that Umno has been given an exemption under the Societies Act 1966 (Act 832) regarding the resolution for no contest for the posts of president and deputy president passed during the party's 2022 General Assembly (PAU).

In a statement, Saifuddin said the exemption was made based on Section 70 of the Act.

"In reference to Umno's constitution and meeting rules, the ministry had decided to grant an exemption from compliance Section 13(1)(c)(iv) through Section 70 of Act 832 regarding the decision of the additional motion that had been approved at the PAU 2022 with regards to no-contest for the posts of president and deputy president in the upcoming Umno election," said Saifuddin in the statement.

Under Section 70 of the Act, the minister may at his discretion in writing exempt any society registered under this Act from all or any of the provisions of this Act.

On Saturday, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had reportedly said that the party had received a letter from the Home Ministry, confirming that the RoS had accepted the party's no-contest resolution for the top two posts.

Zahid had said that Umno had received the two-page letter from the Home Ministry dated March 3.
