No political interference over Bersatu's constitution amendment, says Saifuddin

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry today stressed that there will be no political interference over Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's (Bersatu) request to the Registrar of Societies (RoS) on its constitution amendment.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, said the request, however, had yet to be submitted to the RoS.

"I haven't received any notification (from RoS) over the matter. They (Bersatu) could have sent the request but I have not been notified of anything yet.

"(And) this is the problem (on political interference). Just because they have done it previously, they think I will do the same.

"They have interfered with RoS previously and they think the ministry will do the same, but this is wrong (silap besar)," he said at a press conference today.

Last Saturday, Bersatu passed a motion to amend its constitution to prevent more of its MPs from switching allegiance and declaring support for other parties.

During the party's special general assembly, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the amendment of Clause 10 of Bersatu's constitution, which was in line with the anti-hopping provision under Article 49A of the Federal Constitution, would automatically trigger a by-election.

Bersatu is expected to also send letters to its lawmakers who switched sides for official confirmation over their stance in supporting the unity government.

Following this, Bersatu Supreme Council member Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan had urged RoS to approve the party's constitutional amendments immediately to allow the amendment to be in force as soon as possible.

Wan Saiful also hoped that there would be no political interference that could influence the process.

At the same time, Bersatu information chief Datuk Razali Idris also expressed hopes for RoS to not cause "trouble" for them.
