Experts to Pas: Focus on being proper opposition for good of people instead of dreaming of taking Putrajaya

KUALA LUMPUR: Political experts believe that Pas should focus on playing a better role on the opposition front.

They believe the party's Putrajaya pursuit would only hinder and not propel any progress in bringing the nation together.

Political analyst Dr Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin said Pas and its fellow coalition members should let the current unity government fully exercise its term for the sake of the country's economic and political stability.

He said people want stability and progress, adding that they do not want to be the collateral in petty politicking.

"All the political rhetoric must stop... let the Madani government prove themselves.

"The party needs to lift itself by not reiterating the slogan that they are taking over Parliament, or taking over Putrajaya."

Nirwandy added that political leaders should focus on the betterment of the nation in both social and economic development.

International Islamic University Malaysia Associate Professor Dr Syaza Farhana Mohamad Shukri echoed Nirwandy's views, saying that Pas should come to terms with its role as the opposition and perform its duties.

"There is nothing wrong or embarrassing to be in the opposition, especially one as strong as they are.

"They should realise the important role they could be playing in Malaysia's democracy," she said.

While both experts agree that Pas' eagerness to helm the federal government were warranted, they believe the present administration will not change until the current term ends.

Last night, Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man expressed the party's confidence that it will helm the federal government as part of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.

During his address ahead of the 69th Pas Muktamar, he said the party should be ready when the time comes for it to return to Putrajaya.
