'Door's closed for now' says Pas veep on possibility of Umno team-up

SHAH ALAM: Pas vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad today alluded that the door is closed for now to any form of political cooperation between the Islamist party and Umno.

The party, said Idris, wants to focus on strengthening cooperation between Pas and its political allies in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) pact and efforts to foster stronger unity among the ummah.

"We are moving forward with PN and efforts to unite the ummah which is a greater cause (in comparison to the possibility of Pas rekindling its cooperation with Umno).

"Furthermore, Umno is now working with DAP (in the unity government).

"DAP will sing praises to Umno if the latter is not going against the wishes of the former. The party (DAP) will reject Umno if the latter goes against the former," he told reporters after the party's 69th Muktamar (general assembly) here today.

Asked if the door is still open for a possible political cooperation between the two parties, Idris replied: "The matter was not discussed today (during the party's muktamar). We only discussed internal matters."

He refused to answer when asked the question in the event Umno decides to change its political standing and work with parties in PN.

"If that happens, the matter will be discussed on another occasion.

"Such a decision cannot be made personally or by a single party but collectively in PN," he said.
