Hadi: Treat opposition fairly as we're not enemies

KUALA LUMPUR: The government must treat opposition members of parliament fairly and provide allocations equal to what is given to government parliamentarians, says Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.

Hadi, who is Marang MP, said this was because the government and opposition were not necessarily enemies.

He also said the granting of allocations to government MPs was not in line with Islamic teachings.

"The allocation is not given to the opposition, but given to those who support (the government). This is not Allah's teachings.

"Hence, act fairly. The government and the opposition are not necessarily enemies. Even when dealing with enemies, fairness is also required," he said during his debate on the 2024 Supply Bill in the Dewan Rakyat.

Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said he would not authorise budget allocations for opposition MPs unless negotiations were conducted with the federal administration.

Anwar reportedly said this after he was met with criticism from opposition MPs as they did not get an equal allocation for development purposes in their constituencies.

Meanwhile, Hadi also condemned the government's actions in pressuring the opposition, but disposed of court cases involving some of the government's politicians.

"They take action against those who oppose (the government) and they raid the offices, homes and so on that lead to cases (in court).

"However, their friends get DNAA (discharge not amounting to acquittal). Some who have been sentenced were released and pardoned," he said without citing specific examples.
