Muhyiddin: PN to hold roundtable conference on syariah legislation

KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional (PN) is set to conduct a roundtable conference on efforts to strengthen the position of syariah legislation.

Coalition chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the conference will be led by Pas vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad and chaired by Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.

He said the roundtable conference was also aimed at safeguarding the interest of Muslims.

"This roundtable conference and technical committee will involve the participation of constitutional and Islamic legal experts, scholars and relevant stakeholders.

"PN views the Federal Court's decision seriously, and we believe it will have a significant impact on the position and scope of syariah law in Malaysia," Muhyiddin said in a statement today.

He said the decision to hold the talks was reached in a special meeting of the PN Supreme Council held last night, which was attended by the presidents of the coalition parties.

The meeting was chaired by Muhyiddin and attended by Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, Gerakan president Datuk Dominic Lau and other members of the PN Supreme Council.

"The meeting discussed and deliberated specifically on the recent Federal Court decision regarding the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Enactment and its impact on syariah legislation, Muslims and and Malaysian society in general."

On a separate matter, Muhyiddin said Labu assemblyman Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker has been appointed as Negri Sembilan PN liaison body chairman, effective Feb 12.

He said PN Supreme Council expressed its highest appreciation and gratitude to Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu who had served as the previous Negri Sembilan PN liaison body chairman," he said.
