Samsuri not against reviving Muafakat Nasional

KUALA LUMPUR: Pas vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar is not opposed to the idea of reviving the Muafakat Nasional alliance with Umno.

The Terengganu menteri besar, who appeared as a guest on the "Keluar Sekejap" podcast earlier this week, said Umno, together with Pas splinter group Parti Amanah Negara and other Malay-Muslim parties, should unite for the people.

"In my personal opinion, we have to be very politically dynamic in our country. Nobody can be enemies forever, or friends forever.

"Coming together can mean many different things… it doesn't mean that we merge into one party.

"What is vital is that we work together through an alliance or cooperation. And what's important is that we make a decision based on what is right, and not sentiment.

"For me, this includes Amanah and Umno, and other Malay-Muslim parties, to be together."

Unhappy with the pro-ulama Pas leadership, a group of party leaders ousted from power in June 2015 announced the formation of a new splinter Islamic movement in the form of Amanah.

Later that year, Amanah joined hands with PKR and DAP to form Pakatan Harapan, replacing the defunct Pakatan Rakyat, which Pas was a part of.

Pas spiritual leader Datuk hashim Jasin had, on Feb 15, said the Islamist party would not close the door to a cooperation with Umno to revive MN.

On Feb 25, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi however said Pas was insincere about reviving the pact, as it was not Umno who left MN, but Pas.

"They stabbed us in the back and caused us trouble, going beyond what we agreed on. I do not think they are making a sincere offer," he said.
