Sabah PKR internal discord: Calls for resignation met with party unity appeal

KOTA KINABALU: In a bid to quell internal dissent, Sabah PKR has urged its division leaders to address their concerns and differences through established party channels.

This call comes in response to calls for the resignation of the state's PKR chairman Datuk Dr Sangkar Rasam.

The state PKR Leadership Council secretary, Samsuddin Sidek, said: "The appointment of the State Leadership Council chairman adheres to the party's constitution and is approved by the president."

He noted that the recent restructuring of state leadership council chairmen, including the retention of Sangkar as the Sabah State MPN chairman, was part of a broader party initiative.

"Therefore, all parties should respect the decision made by the party president," he said in a statement.

Samsuddin added that the internal upheaval may result from differences of opinion, but this is a common occurrence in any organisation.

The 15 division chiefs, including elected representatives Datuk Mustapha Sakmud (Sepanggar member of parliament), Datuk Christina Liew (Api-Api assemblyman), and Peto Galim (Inanam assemblymen), had jointly signed a statutory declaration to call for the resignation.

One of the complaints was the lack of training held to empower its members in leadership skills.

However, Samsuddin said there were many programmes held at the state and grassroots levels, such as meetings to strengthen relations between leaders and members.

There were also food basket assistance, periodic training, cultural, and family events, among others.

As the party prepares for the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election, Samsuddin urged all members to focus on this critical event, setting aside internal differences for the greater good of the party.
