Zahari Kechik says he is still a Bersatu MP and PN member

JELI: Zahari Kechik said today he is still a Bersatu member of parliament for Jeli and a Perikatan Nasional (PN) member.

The lawmaker said to date, he was not sacked by Bersatu.

"So far, I did not receive any call from Bersatu's leaders regarding my status in the party.

"I only received calls from my friends from few political parties asking about my current situation and I have told them I am still a Bersatu MP until today and still remain as a PN member.

"I was informed that Bersatu leaders have gone to the Registrar of Societies (RoS) recently regarding the party constitution's amendments.

"It is up to the leaders and we will wait for their next course of action against me and other Bersatu MPs who had expressed their support to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim," Zahari told reporters when attending a breaking of fast event organised by the Jeli Umno division here last night.

Also present were State Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub and Jeli Umno division chief Datuk Mohd Adhan Kechik.

He also said there was no issue about his party membership if a by-election needed to be held for whatever reason. He said his priority right now is to serve his constituents.

"I believe the RoS will take time to process Bersatu's application and I don't think there will be a by-election in the next two or three years.

"Therefore, it is better for me to complete my tenure as Jeli MP and I will ensure that I give my best service for my people."

On March 11, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and its party leaders had gone to the RoS headquarters in Putrajaya on March 11 and brought documents pertaining to the party's constitution amendments.

This followed the party's decision to amend its constitution aimed at preventing members from switching sides.

Six Perikatan Nasional MPs and one assemblyman pledged their support to the current government.

The six MPs who have switched allegiance are Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar) and Datuk Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).

The assemblyman is Selat Klang assemblyman Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari, the former Selangor Bersatu chief who announced his support for Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari earlier this month.

In Nov 8 last year, Zahari had said in a statement that he is shifting his support from the PN-led opposition to the Madani government for the sake of development and progress of his parliamentary constituency.

He added that his support for Anwar will remain until the next general election and that his shift of allegiance was not made under any duress or pressure from anyone.

Zahari announced his decision to support the government less than 24 hours after Mohd Azizi declared his support for the Madani government.
