Saifuddin: PKR must learn from failed reform movements worldwide

SHAH ALAM: PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has urged the party's members to learn from the failed reform movements around the world now that it is in power.

He said there were reform movements in Africa and Europe that failed to translate their electoral victories into reforms.

Saifuddin said the failed movements could not meet the high expectations of the people and could not realise the promised reforms.

Some reform movements also failed as their leaders went 'astray' after enjoying the benefits that come with power.

"When they were in the opposition, life was hard, then they were 'tested' with the benefits that come from being in the government," he said in his speech at PKR's 25th-anniversary celebration here today.

"That is when they forgot the very foundations of their struggle and instead focused on acquiring wealth.

"This is what can cause the failure of a reform movement."

Saifuddin said the success of a reform movement is measured in the ability to realise policies and programmes that will benefit the people.
