NST Leader: UNSC fails, again

THE United Nations is a misnomer. "Divided Nations" is more like it. Look at how it ignored the rights of the Palestinians for 75 years.

The UN General Assembly' resolutions are all bark and no bite. It isn't a law-making body. The UN Security Council is, but it loves to dither when it comes to the Palestinians. Never mind if its dithering causes death and destruction to the world's longest persecuted people.

Some of the UNSC members have sold their souls to the Zionist cause, which is to kill as many Palestinians or, if they can't, drive them out of Palestine as they have been doing since 1947 and earlier, so that they can establish another stolen Israel, comprising Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem. To these nations, the massacre of 20,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, isn't enough to stop the Israeli genocide. Compassion is very hard to come by in this cruel world of ours.

But the world is beginning to say enough is enough. Even the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter, which allows him to bring to the attention of the UNSC any matter which threatens the maintenance of international peace and security. A first since 1989. The Zionist regime's Gaza carnage almost caused World War 3 last month. This month poses a similar danger as Tel Aviv pursues its collective punishment of Palestinian civilians, especially women and children.

European nations, though only a handful, are beginning to be disturbed by their conscience. France had a February surprise for the Zionist regime. On Feb 2, its Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Anne-Claire Legendere slammed Israel for its "policy of terror" in the West Bank aimed at displacing Palestinians with illegal Israeli settlers. The call for the UNSC to act against Israel is growing louder.

Benjamin Netanyahu and his genocidal cabinet aren't going to allow the carnage to stop. They will manufacture lies to be swallowed by the West. Some do swallow them. Consider one. The West says the attack by Hamas on Oct 7 was unprovoked. For 75 years, the Palestinians were massacred, driven out and persecuted. More than 700,000 were driven out in 1948. Tens of thousands were massacred. Their land and other assets were either stolen or destroyed. Today, there are at least five million Palestinian refugees and none of them is allowed to return to their homeland. How is this unprovoked?

Nations with conscience wanted the UNSC to act now. But late Friday, when the UNSC resolution calling for a ceasefire was passed 13-1, the United States vetoed it, defying all appeals to save the Palestinians, especially women and children who have been condemned to collective punishment. The veto doesn't only defy appeals to conscience, but logic as well.

Ceasefire, the US argued, would plant the seeds of another war because Hamas isn't interested in peace — another Israeli lie that the US has chosen to swallow. First things first. This isn't a "war". It is a massacre by a well-armed apartheid regime. Secondly, Hamas was established in 1987, but this so-called "war" has been going on since at least 1948.
