What are the qualities that make a good leader?

IN the 19th century, the United States elected a person who would become the role model for good character. Abraham Lincoln is known in modern history as a hero with high virtue and a noble character.

However, as time passed by amid growth and progress, good qualities diminished while egocentrism prevailed.

It is a misfortune that can befall any nation.

Note that as our country gets into the general election mood, character assassination of political rivals sets in.

Slander starts to dominate political campaigns, political tabloids and social media as the search for power mounts.

The nation’s political landscape seems to move into a new low.

Some politicians choose slander since it is the easiest and cheapest way to get votes. With information technology at one’s fingertips, slander can reach millions in just a second.

Such dirty tactics will continue to sell where there are buyers who are willing to consume them.

These seeds of hatred can never be good for anyone. Hatred and revenge are harmful. It destroys our peace of mind and repeals the goodness of our hearts. It threatens a nation’s harmony and breaks so ciety. We become weaker.

No one will benefit from these actions.

Remember that noble character is all-encompassing, portrayed by noble words and behaviour.

Good politicians articulate visions, mission and values. Bad politicians succumb to slander and spite to gain support.

Therefore, choose the ones with upright character; visionaries who portray good conduct. If we can use this as a yardstick, we can never go wrong.
