OIC must act to reduce tension

IT is not surprising that the severance of diplomatic ties with Qatar led by Saudi Arabia has become a divisive issue.

However, is the move a good decision? It depends on which stakeholder you ask.

The decision works for the United States-bloc led by Israel.

It offers opportunities for Israel to become the main architect of the Middle East’s future.

Yet, it is never that simple. Turkey has played a vital role and has developed a quiet understanding with Qatar.

While the US can be unwavering in its support for Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, it also needs support from Turkey to go against the Islamic State and weaken Russia’s influence in the Middle East.

All being said, the crisis will adversely impact Gulf countries.

Indeed, it is not too late for them and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation countries, especially Malaysia, to take action to reduce the tension. Muslim countries need to stand together to uphold solidarity.
