Leave your kids in safe hands

THE death of 11-year-old Nur Muarzara Ulfa Muhammad Zainal, who suffered physical and sexual abuse, has again turned the spotlight on unregistered childcare centres.

It is sad to note the many infant deaths occurring at unlicensed centres operating from homes and managed by untrained personnel.

These centres are flourishing due to demand.

When both parents are working, these unlicensed centres appear to be the answer, with many not realising it may be a dangerous option.

Without a second thought, parents opt for these illegal centres.

Some paid a heavy price when their children were exposed to accidents, suffered serious injuries or died, as in the case of Nur Muarzara.

Regulations and laws must be strictly enforced to curb abuses.

We cannot allow this sad state of affairs to continue.

It is hoped that the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry will conduct a comprehensive study to ensure childcare is given priority to protect our children.

Parents will have peace of mind when they know that trained caretakers are minding their children in licensed centres.

Licensed centres must play a meaningful and significant role to promote and create awareness about the importance of quality childcare.

We pray that there will not be another case of Nur Muarzara, but that children’s safety and welfare are given serious attention.

Parents ought to be mindful that serious consequences may arise if their baby or child is placed in an unlicensed centre that flouts the standards and requirements set by the authorities.
