Retrenchment not the best solution for MAS

AS a frequent flyer for more than 40 years, I am concerned about Malaysia Airlines Bhd’s (MAB) situation.

I hope the government will make a rational decision on the future of the carrier. Although many believe that MAB should be privatised, I hope it will not involve retrenchment.

At the same time, the government must ensure that the MAB brand, better known as MAS, is maintained as it is our pride and national icon.

Many parties think MAB’s recovery efforts should not involve full privatisation as the government needs to maintain MAB as the national airline.

Veteran newsman Datuk A. Kadir Jasin said the government’s four turnaround initiatives, costing almost RM25 billion with the retrenchment of 6,000 employees, had failed.

This proves that retrenchment is not the best way to help MAB return to the black.

Any turnaround plan should give justice to MAB employees to appreciate their contributions to the company.

What needs to be done is to draw up plans that will help the carrier strengthen its operations.

The government should get input from the MAB management and experts, including economists and captains of the industry.

We should not forget that Malaysia has corporate figures who excel locally and abroad.

I believe MAB can return to the right track with support from aviation industry experts.

Despite the challenges faced by the company, the crew members never faltered in their responsibilities because of their love for their profession.

They are committed to their work despite drawbacks like removal of privileges and perks.

We need to keep in mind that the MAB aircraft are not only used to fly passengers but are also our national flag bearer.

They promote Malaysia as a peaceful and prosperous multi-racial country.

MAB is an economic enabler and strategic asset that shouldn’t be neglected.
